What is Women’s History Month?
Women’s History Month actually began as Women’s History Week. It was first celebrated in Santa Barbara, California in 1978. It was a local tradition at first, coinciding with International Women’s Day in March, and focusing on the contributions of women to our nation’s history. It quickly picked up steam and other cities throughout America started celebrating Women’s History Week too. In 1980, Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th to be Women’s History Week across the country. This was brought on by a consortium of women’s groups and historians led by the National Women’s History Alliance (then called the National Women’s History Project) lobbying for national recognition. It was celebrated the same week each year until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9 designating March as Women’s History Month. Now, we take the month of March to recognize the incredible accomplishments of women throughout American history.
